The BIM model is a three-dimensional model which consists of objects, which contain specific informations connected through relations, and which describe some type of structure. Models which are based on surfaces (i.e. SketchUP), on entities (i.e. 3D AutoCAD), geometrical models (i.e. Autodesk VIZ), and 3D models which are not intended for construction-architectural design (SolidWorks, Inventor) are not BIM models.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a system for the digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a construction object. BIM includes the generation of a digital model and the management of that model, to support the design, construction and maintenance of a building throughout its life cycle.
